Earnings
 Many educators belong to local or state unions, typically the American Federation of Teachers or the National Education Association. The purpose of an educator’s union is to represent the interests of teachers to school districts and the state, particularly in the areas of compensation and benefits. Unions also discuss hours, work load and work environments on behalf of their members.
In addition to the base salaries offered to teachers, there are several additional methods of increasing their annual incomes. Teachers can often earn additional funds through coaching sports within their schools, through leading student groups and organizations after school and through teaching additional semester hours such as summer school.
In addition to adding these programs or hours to their schedules, some school districts offer additional compensation for teachers who have earned their master’s degrees in education. Depending upon the individual schools, many private schools offer higher annual compensation than public schools within the area, although this is not always true. |
