Educators address teacher pay in report to Arne Duncan

2/3/2011

More than 150 K-12 public school teachers recently had an opportunity to present their ideas to U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, according to The Washington Post.

As part of the VIVA (Voices, Ideas, Vision, Action) Project, teachers from 27 states contributed to a report that examined the most pressing challenges in their profession, and then some of the educators met with Duncan to discuss these issues. The report, which is titled Voices from the Classroom, tackles a variety of topics compensation, evaluations and community partnerships.

In regards to teacher pay, the report stated that while the single-scale system does not reward the nation's best educators, there is not enough evidence to support a performance-based system, the news provider reported. Many federal and state leaders, including President Barack Obama and Duncan, have pledged their support for a teacher-compensation system that is based on their students' scores.

Keith Harrison, a ninth grade instructor from Pennsylvania, told Duncan that American teachers are concerned about this national push toward performance-based teacher pay. According to the media outlet, Harrison said that teachers are "open to dialogue," but they believe lawmakers are rushing into these systems without enough evidence on its effectiveness.

The need for more adequate professional development programs was also a request made by the group of educators. In response to this national call for better training programs for educators, Charlotte Danielson - an author of The Framework for Teaching - will offer a webinar on February 16 that explains how teachers can improve the overall culture in their classrooms.
