A school district in Michigan has been selected by a fellowship program in an effort to produce better math and science teachers at K-12 schools.
The Muskegon Chronicle reports that the Woodrow Wilson Michigan Teaching Fellowship will award $30,000 stipends to recent graduates who have degrees in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and who wish to pursue a master's degree in teaching. In return, individuals must commit to a three-year teaching tenure at a high-need secondary school within the district.
The $16.7 million fellowship, which is funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, aims at improving the quality of STEM education at urban and rural schools. The fellowship accepts students who have earned at least a 3.0 grade point average at an undergraduate degree program.
Six universities have been chosen to participate in the fellowship, and each school will accept 20 individuals to begin the program in the summer of 2011.
STEM education will take center stage on November 17, when Al Gore will moderate Time Warner Cable's online town hall discussion called Math, Science and the Future of Our Nation. The program, which can be viewed live online, will allow American students to communicate with children in nations that are well-renowned for their STEM education. |
