Lawmakers pitch would make it hard to throw a strike

Major changes could be coming for public school teachers in Illinois.

According to The Aurora Beacon-News, legislators in the Prairie State may vote on a school reform bill as soon as January. Some of the new measures being considered, if passed, would make it more difficult for teachers to obtain tenure and harder for unions to strike. Furthermore, educators who have frequent negative performance evaluations could have their teaching certificates revoked.

Earlier this month, lawmakers, teachers union representatives, school officials and community leaders all testified before a legislative committee at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, according to the media outlet. Members of the Stand for Children organization argued that Illinois is the third highest state in teachers strikes, while teacher unions reps said that strikes only occur in severe cases.

Meanwhile, community members and educators in Chicago are advocating for more public control of the city's education system. The Chicago Tribune recently reported that a coalition of citizens are urging the next mayor of the Windy City to establish an elected, 13-member school board.

Currently, Major Richard Daley - whose is not running for reelection - has the authoritative party to appoint a school chief executive officer and the school board members. Critics of the system believe that Daley has called on officials with business expertise, but not enough education experience.
