If New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had his way, teacher tenure would be eliminated in the Garden State.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Christie said that he supports a system that gives individual teachers five-year contracts, and school district may renew contracts based on merit, The Wall Street Journal reports. Christie said that he believes the performance-based contracts would motivate teachers to put more effort into their careers.
During his first State of the State speech on Tuesday night, Christie reaffirmed that overhauling teacher tenure is one of his top priorities in 2011. In order for his ideas to become law, the Republican governor would need support of the Democratic-led state legislature.
"I don't know what the justification is for [tenure] any longer, I really don't," Christie told the news provider. "At the end of the five-year period we evaluate. If we want to keep you, great. If we don't, we won't, based on merit."
According to an online WSJ survey, about 76 percent of respondents believe that state and local governments should eliminate tenure for public school teachers. The percentage points were based on results as of Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, the bipartisan charity organization ProCon.org has created a new website that is dedicated to the teacher tenure issue. The site offers objective research material that aims to help users gain an informed decision on the matter. |
