| Obama spares education in budget proposal |

President Barack Obama dropped the proverbial ax earlier this week, revealing a vast list of cuts in his budget proposal for fiscal year 2012. However, one sector that may see an increase in funding is education.
According to The New York Times, Obama has requested a $77.4 billion budget for the Department of Education, which is a 4 percent increase from the 2010 budget. The President's proposal includes $26.8 billion for K-12 schools, which is a 6.9 percent increase from last year's budget. In addition, special education and Title I funding would boost by hundreds of millions of dollars.
Race to the Top, an initiative that rewards schools who implement reform policies that are suggested by the Obama administration, would also expand if the President's plan is approved by lawmakers. Instead of awarding grants to participating states, which is the current format, the government would provide funding to individual school districts. Some of the Race to the Top goals are charter school expansion, closure of failing schools and enhanced teacher training.
In a recent column for The Washington Times, Valerie Strauss criticized the President for focusing on the wrong aspects of education reform.
The budget "is really a restatement of the administration’s ineffective educational values increased competition for funding rather than equitable distribution of resources, more dependence on standardized tests for evaluation, more punishment for lowest-performing schools and an expansion of charter schools," Strauss wrote. |
