As school districts across the United States try to solve budget deficits, federal stimulus money is helping save jobs - at least in the short term.
For example, the Visalia Time-Delta reports that about $4.5 million in federal stimulus money will allow the California-based Visalia Unified School District to avoid teacher layoffs through 2012. The money can be spent on the salaries and benefits for teachers, administrators and other employees who work directly with students.
"That [delay in layoffs] is the best we can expect," Visalia superintendent Craig Wheaton said. "We can see the crisis out in front of us, but instead of having to deal with it immediately, it's one more year out."
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently announced that more than $100 million in federal grants will be awarded to 29 school districts in the U.S. The funding is one part of President Barack Obama's mission to boost America's reputation as one of the world's leaders in education.
The Allentown School District in Pennsylvania is one of the schools that will receive a grant, and it plans to increase student proficiency and improve its post-secondary commitment rate. |
