Study Teacher pay in Wisconsin has not kept pace with inflation, public sector

3/3/2011

Many supporters of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker's budget proposal, which would eliminate collective bargaining rights for public employees, have argued that outraged teachers have no reason to complain about their salaries or benefits. A new study may prove otherwise.

According to research from the University of Illinois, teacher pay in Wisconsin has lagged far behind other rising trends in the state, such as cost of living and public sector employee wages. Craig A. Olson, a professor of labor and employment relations, calculated that the average college educated private sector worker in the Badger State made 36 percent more than a Wisconsin teacher.

"Not only did Wisconsin teachers not keep up with inflation, their earning power also fell behind their private-sector counterparts," said Olson.

Furthermore, Olson estimated that Walker's proposed changes in employee pension and health benefit contributions, if approved, will cost the average Wisconsin educator about $5,000 in total compensation.

Meanwhile, Republican Senators in Wisconsin are hoping that the threat of arrest will lure back 14 Democrats, who fled to Illinois two weeks ago to protest the GOP's plan. Walker hopes the threat of laying off 1,500 state workers - which he said will occur Friday - will do the trick.
