A six-figure salary is probably a long shot for most K-12 teachers. However, educators at a New York City charter school are earning $125,000 per year as part of an experiment to examine the link between teacher pay and student performance.
According to CBS News, The Equity Project (TEP) is a charter school that is publicly funded but privately run. The goal of the experiment is to prove that well-paid teachers who are held more accountable for their performance will raise student achievement among inner-city kids.
Zeke Vanderhoek, TEP's founder and principal, hopes that the charter school may serve as a national model for the future of public education. Many people agree that instructors should be held more accountable, but some believe that $125,000 per year is too much for a teacher.
The news provider reports that it is more than double the national average for public educators. So, why so much-
"Because they're worth it, because teachers are the key, and if we can pay them this with the existing dollars, why aren't we doing it-" Vanderhoek told the media outlet.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Department of Education recently provided a grant to the Carl C. Icahn Charter School, which is located in NYC. The money will allow the institution to add four more locations in the Big Apple. |
