In his state budget proposal, Washington Governor Chris Gregorie has proposed that the stipends for nationally certified teachers should be suspended for two years.
Most states reward educators with annual bonuses for receiving the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBTS) certification, which is considered the highest recognition in the field. However, Gregorie wants to cut the funds in order to save money.
Gina Wickstead, a NBTS-certified teacher in Washington, recently condemned the governor's plan in a guest column for the Seattle Times. She quoted President Barack Obama from January's State of the Union address, in which he said that America "must reward good teachers and stop making excuses for bad ones."
Wickstead also cited a 2004 study that examined student performance on the Stanford Achievement Test. She reported that students of board-certified teachers performed better than other scholars on approximately 73 percent of the comparisons. The study concluded that learning gains of students who are taught by nationally certified teachers is equal to an extra month in school.
Meanwhile the biotechnology company Amgen recently donated $1.5 million to support science teachers who wish to pursue NBTS certification. The grants, which will be distributed over three years, will help more than 500 educators pay their certification fee in 2011. |
