A total of 50 schools in Tennessee will participate in a field test for new teacher evaluations. The assessments may impact future hiring, firing and incentive-pay scales.
KnowNews.com reports that the Volunteer State received $500 million in federal funds, part of which will fund the evaluations. The grant is part of President Barack Obama's Race to the Top initiative to strengthen education in America.
Tennessee education officials will be using as many as four evaluation models, which will go into effect by the fall of 2011. The Teacher Evaluation Advisory Council (TEAC) will develop recommendations on what should be included in the new assessments.
"The goal is to try to flush out problems, which we know we’re going to have … so we can make corrections and improvements," said Mike Edwards, president of the Knoxville Chamber and a member of the Teacher Evaluation Advisory Council (TEAC).
The National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) study group recently released a report that calls for a reexamination of how America looks at teaching. The group believes that many educators are not equipped with the necessary training to teach 21st century skills to their students. |
