Many early childhood teachers have urged local officials to strengthen their respective community's reading programs.
At an elementary school in Augusta, Maine, government leaders recently got involved by participating in a Read-A-Thon, the Kennebec Journal reports. A total of 37 community and civic leaders visited classrooms and read stories out loud to groups of students. Among the volunteers were state lawmakers, an assistant district attorney and principals from other schools.
Darek Grant, a city councilor, had the opportunity to read aloud at the institution where he attended elementary school, according to the media outlet.
"I remember being in this room," Grant told the news provider. "I don't remember ever being this small."
Augusta Mayor Patrick Paradis, sticking to a political theme, read the book "Meet John F. Kennedy" to a sixth-grade class. He told the news source that he picked the selection because the the 50th anniversary of Kennedy's inauguration address recently passed.
Although it has been almost two decades since former First Lady Barbara Bush lived in the White House, she is still helping students read. The Malvern School, which has 20 locations throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey, recently launched the Mrs. Bush Story Time Contest.
The initiative challenges kids to create a project based on something they learned from listening to audio tapes of the former First Lady, who spoke about the importance of reading. |
