Math and science are among the highest priority topics in U.S. education, and many believe that these subjects should be promoted at an early age. The Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts has created an initiative that aims to introduce STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) learning in pre-k and kindergarten children.
A $300,628 grant has been provided by the U.S. Department of Education to help the foundation achieve its goal of promoting these areas of study to kids. Workshops will be held in the classroom to combine dance, drama and music with lessons on numbers, patterns and measurement. Wolf Trap Teaching Artists will collaborate with teachers to help make the experience useful and engaging for young students.
"Math is truly everywhere in our lives, in cooking, getting dressed, figuring out money and travel time, among many other examples," said early childhood specialist Maria Gallagher. "With the arts, educators can take math off the printed page and make it three-dimensional so that young children can feel and relate to it."
The pilot programs will be held in Fairfax County, Virginia. The foundation intends to establish similar initiatives in 10 selected regions around the country within the next few years. |
