Early childhood teachers in Arizona are exposing students to the importance of agriculture by allowing then to plant their own crops.
According to The Palmer Pioneer, teachers at an elementary school have integrated gardening into their curriculum. Students in the first through fourth grades have been working in a garden that is located next to the school, planting peas, carrots, radishes, broccoli and beets. Professionals in the farming industry have volunteered their time to assist the kids in their gardening project.
The news provider reports that teachers want students to understand how vegetables and other produce gets to the market. Lyle Browning, a master gardener, said that students will also be taught about the economic side of agriculture after the harvest.
"We hope this project will be successful; fostering gardening skills and learning about cooperation. To date, this project has been remarkable," Browning told the news provider.
Even students in major cities - which have more concrete than soil - are being exposed to the benefits of farming. LG Electronics recently announced that is will support the Grow to Learn NYC initiative, which aims to provide the resources needed for every school to have access to a garden. |
