Kindergarten teachers at a Tennessee-based school recently succeeded in getting their students excited about reading.
According to The Jackson Sun, educators at Montessori Magnet School celebrated the 100th day of the academic year by challenging classrooms to read 100 picture books in an hour. One of the classes read 190 books in 60 minutes, while another completed 217. Early childhood teachers and a group of middle school students helped the children read through the selections.
After each text was finished during the challenge, a teacher or volunteer placed a sticky note, which contained the book's title - on a wall outside of the classroom. In the end, the notes formed a giant "100" in the hallway.
Elementary education institutions across the U.S. are searching for fun activities to engage their students in reading. On February 15, popular musician Justin Bieber will take part in a national read-along, which is sponsored by Pizza Hut's Book It! initiative. The annual event encourages children, parents and teachers to download the webcast.
Bieber will read Dr. Suess's The Cat and the Hat, and the event organizers expect that the national attendance will surpass last year's total of 215,000 people. |
