A program in Pennsylvania that allows early childhood teachers to meet their students in advance is celebrating its 13th year.
According to The Herald-Mail, young children who are pre-kindergarten age are participating in the school district's First Steps to Learning. The campaign is designed to expose young children to reading concepts before they become students at primary schools. Officials told the news provider that kindergarten screening scores are on the rise because of First Steps to Learning.
Another important element of the program is that young kids are introduced to their future teachers well in advance, which allows them gain comfort and confidence in the classroom. Kindergarten students who are not familiar with their teacher or school may be intimidated and introverted, which can negatively effect their ability to learn.
“We invite every child between birth and kindergarten age,” Molly Moran, the school district's director of reading and federal programs, told the news provider.
During the first event, teachers read "The Mitten" by Jan Brett and distributed copies of the book to attendees, the media outlet reported.
Meanwhile, the company IBM recently donated $1.13 million worth of educational materials to YMCA of the USA, in hopes of helping low-income children develop literacy skills. The company's gifts include 100 computers and more than $800,000 worth of software. |
