An Ohio-based nonprofit organization and an NBA franchise have teamed up to develop an engaging educational resource for early childhood teachers.
The group Starting Point and the Cleveland Cavaliers recently launched the program Read2Me, which is a literacy program that is designed for boys between 3 and 5 years old. The pilot initiative will place members of the Cavaliers organization, including team mascots Moondog and Sir CC, in preschool and kindergarten classrooms throughout Ohio to read books aloud.
Read2Me specifically targets African-American and Hispanic boys. Billie Osborne-Fears, the executive director of Starting Point, said that most elementary education instructors are women, so this program will show young boys that men value reading, as well. Among the guest readers will be members of the Cavaliers' Scream Team, which is a troupe of athletes and dancers who entertain fans during the team's home games in Cleveland.
"They read books that appeal to boys - books about animals, planes and superheroes," Osborne-Fears said. "We're looking for male volunteers who are willing to give a few hours to read to boys in our classrooms."
The U.S. Department of Education reports that boys are typically between one and one-and-a-half years behind girls in reading development. The language centers in young girls' brains tend to be more active than those of boys early in childhood. |
