A reading comprehension and language arts program has proven to be helpful in several California schools.
Treasures, which provides professional development programs and resources to assist educators in reading and language arts instruction, has helped elementary schools in a California school district improve their state test scores. In Beverly Gonzalez's fourth-grade class, nearly 90 percent of her students scored at the proficient or advanced level on the standardized tests.
"I have taught several different grade levels since the early 1990s, and this is the first time that I did not need to supplement the language arts curriculum," Gonzalez said.
The Spanish equivalent of Treasures, California Tesoros de Lectura, was also implemented in K-6 classrooms in the school district.
According to The Times-Herald, retail company Target recently pledged to contribute more than $500 million toward U.S. education in the next five years. The funding is part of Target's reading initiative, which will include the donation of two million books to children in need. |
