According to a report that was recently issued by Oregon State University, children who participate in a game that was designed to improve self-regulatory behavior may achieve higher scores on early literacy and numeracy tests.
Entitled the head-toes-knees-shoulders task, the game was used in a study that was conducted by Megan McClelland, an associate professor of human development and family science at Oregon State University.
More than 800 preschool and kindergarten aged children from the United States, China, South Korea and Taiwan participated in the research. One aim of the study was to determine whether predictions of academic performance based on the task would be affected similarly in countries that are known to have stronger self-regulation practices than the United States.
"Beyond demographic variables or teacher’s expectations, we found that the children in all the countries who performed well on the task did significantly better in math, vocabulary and early literacy," said McClelland. "It shows that beyond cultural factors, self-regulation is important for early academic success."
McClelland has been granted $1.6 million by the Department of Education to refine the task. If successful, her research could be adopted as part of early childhood teacher assessments to determine whether children are ready to begin elementary education. |
