The Detroit Free Press reports that early childhood education is suffering in Michigan because many kids enter kindergarten unprepared.
In a survey of kindergarten teachers in the Wolverine State, approximately 35 percent of children who enter school are not ready to learn, according to the news provider. Many educators believe that a lack of opportunity for kids to attend a preschool program is a contributing factor to the high number of students who are not ready for kindergarten.
In Michigan, where the economy has been struggling for the past decade, business people are shifting more focus on the education programs within the state. Vernice Anthony, president of the Greater Detroit Area Health Council, and Leslie Murphy, president of Murphy consulting, both serve on the Children's Leadership Council of Michigan. In a recent commentary piece for the Free Press, they said that early childhood development can help the short and long-term health of the state's economy.
The state of public education in the U.S. has been a hot-button topic in recent years because America has fallen behind several industrialized countries in student achievement, especially in math and science. In an attempt to solve this problem, the U.S. Department of Education will host the first International Summit on the Teaching Profession in March.
The event, which will take place in New York, will invite teachers and administrators in the U.S., as well as the top education officials from across the globe. |
