Horizons National wins award for outstanding summer education

8/16/2010

Horizons National was recently named the winner of the 2010 Excellence in Summer Learning Award by the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA) for its superior education program.

NSLA, which serves to bridge gaps in learning by promoting summer school for K-12 students, received applications from dozens of organizations across the country. The award is offered each year to recognize outstanding summer programs that help kids improve their academic achievement during the school year.

“We are proud and delighted to highlight the impact that an effective summer program can have on narrowing the achievement gap,” said Horizons National CEO Lorna Smith. “Our experience shows that mixing high-quality academics, athletics and cultural enrichment can provide vulnerable students with a strong academic boost that will support their school achievement.”

Horizons partners with independent institutions that educate over 2,000 low-income public school students every summer. For five days over a period of six weeks, these children participate in lessons, college tours, cultural activities, projects and field trips at no cost to their families.

Previous research has shown that summer vacation is often associated with significant drops in academic achievement, especially for children from low-income areas. By the time they complete the fifth grade, these students can be as much as three years behind their peers in reading comprehension.
