The mayor of San Antonio, Texas, has challenged high schools across the city to make use of a newly expanded Cafe College resource center to ensure that high school graduates are prepared to succeed when entering the workforce, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
"We want to create in San Antonio a brain-powered community - a core of young people who are well educated, well prepared and ready to take on the jobs of the 21st century," said Mayor Julián Castro, as quoted by the newspaper.
The center, which provides college application and financial aid information for high school students who are considering applying to colleges, recently underwent a significant expansion. Reopening Wednesday, the Cafe College center has nearly tripled in size and now boasts a computer lab, classroom facilities, office space and a boardroom for the San Antonio Education Partnership.
According to data from the Texas board of education, the rate of high school students who dropped out before graduating in 2010 fell more than 2 percent from the previous year's figures. Graduation rates across Texas high schools increased by more than 3 percent in that same year. |
