A school district in Wisconsin was sued following an incident three years ago when a seventh-grade girl was bullied by her classmates. The federal lawsuit claims that educators failed to protect her.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, that student recently spoke to a group of more than 100 students and teachers at a conference in Wisconsin and spread the message that schools should have stricter anti-bullying policies.
"I don't want what happened to me to happen to other kids," said the girl, who was identified as Jane Doe because of the lawsuit.
The event also featured other expert speakers and aimed to share bully prevention tips to the teachers and students in attendance. One idea that was generated during the conference was the creation of a bullying box, where students can identify incidents anonymously.
Meanwhile, educators in Michigan are set to implement a new anti-bullying strategy of their own. The Michigan Elementary and Middle School Principals Association has teamed with Hazeldon, a nonprofit foundation, to launch the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program in an effort to reduce conflicts between peers in the educational setting. |
