The Connecticut Education Association (CEA) has appointed Mary Loftus Levine as its new executive director. A veteran advocate of teachers, Levine has worked with education officials in Connecticut since 2008 in her role as director of policy and professional practice for the CEA. She succeeds John Yrchik, who will retire on August 18.
"Throughout the many years that I have worked with Mary, she has been a strong advocate for teachers," said George Coleman, acting state education commissioner, in a statement. "I look forward to her continued contributions to the advancement of teaching and learning in our public schools."
Levine has been a member of the CEA since 1986, when she worked as an elementary school teacher in Springfield, Massachusetts. She became actively involved in advocacy work when she was appointed president of her local teachers association, a position she held for three years before becoming an intern for the Massachusetts Teachers Association. Levine assumed responsibility for the CEA's political organization activities in 2004.
According to the CEA's official website, the organization was founded in Meriden, Connecticut in 1848. Today, the CEA has more than 140,000 members, including K-12 teachers in addition to retired educators and students who are seeking to enter the teaching profession. |
