Georgia officials address rising high school dropout rate

8/31/2010

An estimated 28,000 minority students drop out of high school in Georgia each year. This alarming number has prompted the State Board of Education to develop a set of Common Core State Standards, which is intended to address the achievement gap and keep kids on track to graduate.

Last week, parents, teachers and other equity stakeholders gathered at a series of meetings to discuss the implementation of these new standards. Education officials urged community members to help ensure the success of the guidelines.

They emphasized the importance of establishing educational equality for minority students, and that adequate support must be given to these efforts and to professional development for teachers.

The standards "present a viable solution for our students, but this framework is not a silver bullet," said Michael Wotorson, executive director of the Campaign for High School Equity (CHSE). "These standards have the potential to build upon the already-established Georgia Performance Standards. But as implementation takes shape, we need to remember we're at the beginning of the process."

The CHSE was joined by 100 Black Men of Atlanta, the W.E.B. Du Bois Society and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund in presenting the standards.
