Approximately 1,400 educators in Springfield, Massachusetts were recently informed that they will have to give back some of their teacher pay.
According to The Boston Globe, the Springfield school system accidentally overpaid these instructors by $1.2 million. Certain teachers who were not eligible for pay increases were given raises that were effective as of July 1, 2010.
The school district's superintendent, Alan Ingram, said that the School Committee began discussing options to resolve the situation last Thursday.
"I deeply regret the confusion this mistake has caused teachers and we are working hard to fix it," said Ingram, quoted by the news source. "Our teachers have done nothing wrong. They are on the receiving end of this error and we will address it in a way that respects our teachers and their financial obligations, but also protects the interest of taxpayers."
According to the Springfield-based newspaper, The Republican, the overpayments average about $835 per teacher. Timothy Collins, president of the Springfield Education Association, suggested that educators should receive a variety of repayment options, ranging from one to three years. |
