The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has released a statement to address America's subpar student achievement on science assessment tests.
Francis Eberle, the executive director of NSTA, said that it is "completely unacceptable" that many U.S. students test below proficiency levels on national science assessments. He added that America cannot afford to have "a scientifically illiterate workforce."
Although Eberle conceded that many schools have been forced to cut staff and resources because of budget constraints, he said that a challenging economy should not prevent institutions from investing in science teacher jobs.
"Having quality teachers is crucial if we want to increase student achievement in science and remain competitive in the global economy of the 21st century," said Eberle.
Furthermore, Eberle urged education leaders and lawmakers to commit the necessary resources that are needed to fund quality science programs.
President Barack Obama was slated to talk about the need for better science education in the U.S., which can help create jobs and allow the country to remain competitive with other industrialized nations. According to report that was sponsored by the National Academies of Science and Engineering, General Electric has placed the majority of its research and development personnel outside of the U.S.
In addition, the number of automotive manufacturing jobs in Michigan has dropped from 460,000 in 1970 to approximately 98,000 today. |
