If New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gets his way, the teacher pay system in the Garden State will be revamped.
As part of his effort to reward good teachers and punish inadequate educators, Christie has proposed a new assessment method that would eliminate tenure. According to NBC New York, the governor outlined his plan last Thursday.
The new evaluation system would be based on two factors student performance and peer review. If a teacher is graded "highly inefficient" for two years in a row, he or she would be placed on probation for the third year, the news provider reports. If the educator did not improve during the probation year, he or she would automatically be fired.
Christie said that only 17 teachers have been fired in New Jersey over the past decade. He said that rate is unacceptable considering the high number of children who drop out of school or fail standardized tests every year.
The New Jersey Education Association called Christie's plan an "educational disaster," according to the media outlet.
However, other education leaders have praised Christie for his proposal. The New Jersey School Boards Association said that by replacing the current tenure and seniority systems, teachers will be retained and rewarded based solely on job performance, rather than age or experience. |
