| Personal safety makes the grade in Virginia |

Although most elementary education programs focus on subjects such as math, reading and English, officials in Virginia recently taught students and their parents lessons about personal safety.
According to NBC news affiliate WVIR, the Walker Upper Elementary School hosted Home Alone Safety Fair on February 8. Guidance counselors and members of the community addressed important topics, such as fire safety, dangers involving strangers and 9-1-1 etiquette.
"We wanted students and parents to have the opportunity to learn together and learn to plan together on ways that they can stay safe when children are at home by themselves," Charlotte Geddy, one of the instructors, told the media outlet.
The news provider reported that hands-on stations were set up that allowed children to demonstrate what they had learned about personal safety.
Many early childhood teachers in the U.S. incorporate safety lessons into their curriculum, and those individuals now have an opportunity to be rewarded for their efforts. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and Honeywell - a technology and manufacturing company - recently announced the beginning of its annual Got 2B Safe challenge, which encourages teachers to help their students learn valuable tips to prevent child abduction and sexual exploitation.
The teachers who have the best lesson plans that convey safety rules will win a $10,000 classroom makeover.
