Members of the California Retired Teachers Association (CalRTA) have logged nearly 2.6 million hours of volunteer service in the past year, which is valued at more than $54 million.
The Golden State has encountered tough economic times, which has led to cutbacks in funding for schools. In response, hundreds of retired teachers have volunteered their time to help out local communities and school districts. Some educators have donated more than 4,000 hours, which is the equivalent of working full-time for two years.
The 12th annual California Retired Teachers Week takes place from November 7 to 13, and will recognize the work of volunteers who have gone above and beyond to help children. Aside from donating their time, members of the CalRTA also funded more than $485,000 in grants and scholarships to schools, as well as current and future teachers.
The poor economy has negatively affected retirement benefits for some teachers throughout the U.S. For example, the Austin American-Statesman reports that Texas teachers likely will not see an increase on their monthly pension checks anytime soon.
The news provider reports that the investment fund only has about 83 cents for every dollar needed to cover promised benefits over the long term. |
