Teachers across the U.S. are faced with a tough decision when it comes to leading a biology class. School administrators have the final say on which textbooks are used, even though many religious parents are unhappy that some books don't include the biblical concept of creationism in their pages.
According to FOX News, an education committee in Louisiana recently voted 6-1 to approve new biology textbooks for public school students, despite harsh criticism from conservatives. Critics of the books argued that they failed to explain scientific challenges to evolution. Others believe that religious ideas have no place in the classroom.
"There is no major research university in this country that teaches intelligent design or anything like that," Kevin Carman, dean of the Louisiana State University College of Science, told The Associated Press. "It is simply not science."
Although many schools in the U.S. are placing more emphasis on science, school officials in New Jersey are not quite ready to make the passing of a biology test a graduation requirement. According to NorthJersey.com, the Garden State's Board of Education recently said that it will not mandate that students - starting with the Class of 2014 - must pass a biology test to graduate.
The news provider reported that nearly half of the 105,000 high school students who took a pilot biology test last year failed. |
