A school district and a teacher's union in Pennsylvania are inching toward their first contract agreement since June 2008.
The Neshaminy Federation of Teachers (NFT) and the Nashaminy School District engaged in a two-hour negotiation last week, discussing pay raises and healthcare benefits. NFT President Louise Boyd said the talks were beneficial to both parties. Both sides are set to meet again on December 28.
"We discussed the relative positions of both parties in a context in which they can be more effectively analyzed and addressed," said Boyd. "And that sets the stage for further discussions so we can begin to find solutions that are fair and equitable, and make sense for the taxpayers, students, certified staff and administration."
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the union is asking for raises over the next few years of 3 to 4 percent and fully funded health insurance. The school district's most recent offer was 1 percent annual raises, with educators paying 15 to 17 percent of healthcare costs.
Last month, school teachers ended a six-month work-to-contract action in which educators refused to perform extra duties, such as attending back-to-school nights and writing college recommendation letters. The union hoped to demonstrate how many extra duties they perform besides the seven classroom hours per day.
Parents responded to the teachers' boycott by picketing in front of one of the district's elementary schools. Neshaminy School Board President Ritchie Webb told the news provider that the community was "quite angry" about the work slowdown. |
