| Weekend protests over teacher rights rock Nashville |

Thousands of people gathered at the Tennessee State House over the weekend to protest the Republican-sponsored budget proposal that aims to eliminate collective bargaining rights for teachers.
According to The Tennessean, Democratic lawmakers, education activists and union representatives were among the crowd of more than 3,000 people in downtown Nashville on Saturday. In addition, several hundred Tea Party supporters gathered to support the GOP-backed budget.
The news provider reports that both sides are urging for Governor Bill Haslam, a Republican, to back their respective stance. Thus far, the newly-elected leader has remained neutral on the bill.
Meanwhile, the Democratic holdout in Wisconsin has entered its third week. A total of 14 State Senators fled the Badger State last month to protest Governor Scott Walker's proposal, which would limit collective bargaining rights for most public employees.
According to The New York Times, State Senator Mark Miller recently sent a letter to Walker that called for "serious discussions as soon as possible." Democrats will not return to the State Capitol because their presence would give Republicans the quorum that they need to pass the budget. Thus, Miller requested a meeting near the Wisconsin-Illinois border. |
