A controversy in Florida has sparked discussion about animal treatment in K-12 schools.
Two high school students in Alachua County were recently investigated after a YouTube video surfaced showing the teens torturing a a chicken to death in their classroom. This violent act was done without penalty from the school and in the presence of a teacher.
In response, the groups United Poultry Concerns and Humane Educators Reaching Out have filed a petition to the Florida Department of Education that seeks new rules prohibiting inhumane treatment of animals in schools. On March 31, activists will hold a rally at an Orlando-based courthouse to publicize the petition and raise awareness about animal cruelty in schools.
"Instead of learning to be kind to animals, students were taught to be cruel. This is not what students should be learning from their teachers," said Karen Davis, president of United Poultry Concerns president Karen Davis.
Supporters of the new laws claim that animal cruelty promotes a culture of violence and hate in schools, which can lead to bullying among students.
Many teachers have classroom pets, such as gerbils, hamsters and fish. These educators may consider checking their respective school's policies on allowing animals in an educational setting. |
