The American Federation for Children (AFC) has announced the introduction of Assembly Bill 110, which, if passed, will become the Wisconsin Special Needs Scholarship Act. Proposed to the state legislature by Representatives Michelle Litjens, Jason Fields, Evan Wynn, and Senators Leah Vukmir and Terry Moulton, the bill would allow the parents of special needs students to receive funding to send their children to the public or private school of their choice.
Bill 110, which is based on Florida's John M. McKay Scholarship for Students with Disabilities Program, would put Wisconsin among the ranks of seven other states that provide funding to special needs students.
"Wisconsin is taking great strides in giving families with special needs students more educational options," said Betsy DeVos, chairman of the AFC. "These programs provide parents with more choices so they can find the very best schools for their children."
The scholarship program would take into account the cost of services at the student's resident institution as well as the cost of education at the chosen public or private school. Parents of the special needs child would be given funding in the amount of whichever program costs less. |
