| Badger State rewriting its history regarding teacher rights |

Amidst the massive protests in Wisconsin - in which thousands of teachers are fighting for their collective bargaining rights - the nonprofit organization International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans (IFEBF) has released an informational press release detailing the history of this hot-button issue.
For K-12 educators, collective bargaining is the negotiation process between the workers union and an employer. Among other benefits that are discussed, teacher pay, work hours and dispute resolution are primary components of these sessions. Governor Scott Walker and GOP lawmakers have proposed a bill that would eliminate the union's bargaining powers as well as require teachers to contribute to their healthcare and pension funds.
A state that was once known for its pro-union causes is now in the national spotlight for its efforts to take back these rights. The teacher protests have been so massive that several schools have been forced to shut down because of staff shortages.
Although many people have criticized the teachers who called in sick to work - and the doctors who wrote the notes - several medical professionals have publicly defended their decisions. According to The Associated Press, physician Lou Sanner administered 100 of sick excuse notes to educators last week because the teachers were suffering from severe stress.
"Some people think it's a nod-and-a-wink thing, but it's not," Sanner told the news provider. "One of the biggest stresses in life is the threat of loss of income, loss of job, loss of health insurance. People have actually been getting ill from this, or they can't sleep." |
