| Professor says merit-based teacher pay is not working |

The future of teacher pay is highly debated topic throughout the nation, and everyone seems to have an opinion on the issue. According to a professor from the University of Chicago, a system that awards raises based on student performance is not working in the U.S.
Derek Neal, an economics teachers at the college, recently released a report entitled The Design of Performance Pay in Education. After studying various performance pay systems at American schools, he concluded that merit-based bonuses undermine student learning. Instead of helping students master subject matter, educators have an extra incentive to prepare children specifically to do well on tests.
Neal said that if teachers are rewarded for their students' scores, some professionals may abandon comprehensive learning techniques in order to devote more time to activities that prepare kids for assessments.
"As long as education authorities keep trying to accomplish both of these tasks - measurement and incentive provisions - with one set of assessments, they will continue to fail at both tasks," he wrote.
Furthermore, Neal said the merit-pay system could dissuade teachers from pursuing education jobs in low-income or at-risk school districts, where students traditionally score below average on assessment tests. This could potentially widen the achievement gap among students of difference racial and socioeconomic backgrounds. |
