Massive protests at Wisconsin's State House over the pay and collective bargaining rights for public employees has left many schools in the Badger State scrambling for substitute teachers.
According to Fox News, approximately one-fifth of educators at Milwaukee's public schools called in sick on Friday to protest Governor Scott Walker's budget plan, which would require teachers to contribute more to their healthcare and pension plans. In addition, the proposal would strip public employees of most of their power to negotiate benefits and work conditions.
As more teachers have left their classrooms to join protests at the State Capitol, some schools have hired temporary teachers, while some have been forced to shut their doors. The Madison Metropolitan School District has been closed since last Wednesday, the news provider reported.
The teachers' absence has angered some parents, many of whom have been forced to miss work or find emergency daycare to look after their children. According to The Weekly Standard, Mary Bell, president of the Wisconsin Educational Association Council, has advised teachers to go back to their classrooms Tuesday, when kids are scheduled to return from their three-day holiday weekend.
The teachers, however, are receiving staunch support from labor groups and Democratic Party organizations from outside the state. For example, the media outlet reported that the Chicago Teachers Union sent a bus of protesters to Wisconsin on Monday to support public workers. |
