Save the date National initiative focuses on student finances

4/4/2011

Although a lot of attention has been cast on teacher pay in recent months, due in large part to the collective bargaining rights controversy in Wisconsin, the national spotlight will soon shift to how students manage their own finances.

The 15th Annual Teach Children to Save Day is scheduled for April 12. Educators across the U.S. are encouraged to incorporate lessons that promote smart spending and saving habits. The promotion, which was created by the American Bankers Association, offers a resource kit that includes activities, PowerPoint presentations as well as poster and window clings for classroom use.

Banks across the U.S. will participate in Teach Children to Save Day by sending representatives to local schools who will share money-saving tips. For example, S&T Bank will visit schools throughout Western Pennsylvania. The bank has launched three initiatives for children of all ages.

The Moola Moola Kids Saving Account is a club that teaches kids age 13 and younger about the importance of saving. The Smart Start Banking program introduces teenagers to checkbook balancing, account requirements and costly fees to avoid.

High school math teachers may consider integrating money-related activities into their curricula, which could help prepare teens for fiscal decisions during college
