School wins $10,000 grant and high-tech learning tools

7/22/2010

Sandburg Elementary School is the 2010 recipient of the $10,000 Tierney Brothers Classroom of the Future grant, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. Through the program, the school will receive technologically-advanced equipment that will help facilitate learning for ESL students.

Fourth- and fifth-grade teacher Sarah Chaja, who applied for the grant, explained that she did so while thinking of her bilingual students.

“It brings things into the classroom that I can’t provide,” she told the news source. “I can’t take them to the ocean, but I can show them a video of the ocean.”

The prizes include a document camera, a mounted projector, a DVD/VCR player, a laser pointer and an interactive whiteboard, to which every student in the room has a remote. The equipment can also anonymously graph responses when they use the remotes, which can prompt teachers to move on to a new subject after being assured that the students have grasped the material.

The grant was developed by the Tierney Brothers, a national distributor of presentation equipment, and the Minnesota Service Cooperatives. Launched four years ago, the competition focuses on K-12 schools in Minnesota and Wisconsin in order to provide cutting-edge technology to encourage a strong learning environment.
