| Year-long program designed to fortify science education in American schools |

Teachers from across the nation will participate in a fellowship in an effort to bolster science education in the U.S.
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has selected 48 middle and secondary educators from 29 states as Fellows in the 2010 NSTA New Science Teacher Academy. The year-long program aims to promote quality science teaching, enhance teacher confidence and improve content knowledge.
Each Fellow will receive online mentoring from trained professionals who teach in the same discipline. In addition, each teacher will be given financial support in order to attend NSTA's 2011 National Conference on Science Education in San Francisco.
"It is very important that we provide science teachers, especially those just starting their careers, with the knowledge and tools that will help them reach their full potential," said Seigo Kashii, president and CEO of Astellas Pharma, which one of the program's sponsors.
A college in Pennsylvania has established a development program for science teachers as well. The Science Professional Development School (PDS) brings secondary school educators together with college students who are working in science fields. Organizers of PDS hope that participating teachers will take their observations and integrate them into their science lessons. |
