K-12 students in Minnesota prepped for jobs in the health care industry

4/29/2011

According to predictions made by HealthForce Minnesota, a local center focused on health care innovation, the need for clinical laboratory workers is expected to increase 14 percent over the next eight years. As there is currently a shortage of scientists in this industry today, companies such as Allina Hospitals and Clinics (AHC) are attempting to offset this by educating K-12 students about the profession.

For the past four years, AHC employees have made presentations to middle school students in Moundsview, Minnesota about occupations in the health care industry outside of the usual medical professions. As part of the program, students have been exposed to technology and methodology in fields such as urinalysis, phlebotomy, microbiology, and hematology. They have also learned how to use lab instruments and visited blood banks. According to faculty at the Chippewa Middle School, AHC's program is raising awareness in scientific and medical education.

"The sessions make an impact on students," said Christine Warden, science teacher at Chippewa Middle School. "Throughout the school year they will reference what they learned during these sessions."

AHC executives have stated their hope that exposure to the field of clinical laboratory science in K-12 education will lead to a greater number of lab technicians, and enough professionals to meet the growing need.
