Nationwide campaign guides teachers in anti-bullying efforts

10/1/2010

A recent study reveals that a new program which offers anti-bullying tips to teachers and school managers has had significant success.

Steps to Respect: A Bullying Prevention Program is a research-based curriculum that schools across the U.S. have been following in order to reduce bullying amongst kids. According to a University of Washington study, the initiative has led to a 31 percent decrease in bullying behavior at the schools that have implemented the program.

"Being proactive rather than reactive has made a tremendous difference in our schools," said Dr. Judith McBride, former violence prevention coordinator for a California school district.

According to the Boston Globe, a new anti-bullying program is gaining recognition from local officials. The news provider reports that when she was traveling abroad in Australia, college student Amy Kenworthy started "One Goal, One Community: Moving Beyond Bullying and Empowering for Life," and has since introduced it to schools around Boston.

Kenworthy's message is that all members of a community have to work towards stopping negative behavior. To show commitment to the program, members of the community must sign a pledge to help alleviate bullying. More than 10,000 people have already signed the pledge in Australia.
