A team of researchers from Wake Forest University have received a $249,348 grant from Next Generation Learning Challenges. This monetary contribution, which was financed by the Bill & Melina Gates Foundation, is to be used to develop technology-based interactive programs that are geared toward boosting student performance, and creating engaging and effective channels of education.
According to Dan Johnson, a senior lecturer at Wake Forest University and member of the research team, relying on textbooks as a means of teaching is not practical or productive. In order to create effective learning strategies for students in grades K-12 and beyond, students must be able to tailor their education to their own learning style and become engaged in the curriculum.
"Students don't read textbooks - study after study has shown that," said Johnson. "And even if a student completes a reading assignment, the text doesn't promote deep understanding and long-term retention. It facilitates memorization. So why are we still using them-"
The research team will design a learning system that students can customize, and will develop methods of teaching that are multi-faceted and engaging. The program will be built over the next several months, and tested in the classroom for two years before being implemented. |
