Cash-strapped teachers and families are finding it more difficult than ever to provide back-to-school essentials for their students. According to a survey conducted by the National School Supply and Equipment Association, almost one-third of U.S. teachers are spending less on school supplies this year than they did in previous years.
Due to the fact that schools have increasingly tight budgets, more parents must take it upon themselves to provide basic educational tools for their children. These include binders, paper, pens and pencils.
"Back-to-school shopping is putting a strain on many families' budgets," said Romanita Hairston, vice president of World Vision U.S.
The nonprofit government organization has eliminated sales taxes on school supplies and clothing in states such as Illinois and Virginia. It has also provided tips to parents on a restricted budget, advising them to cut coupons and search for reusable or extra materials around the house.
Hairston urged families to utilize local nonprofit organizations in their communities, which often host free backpack distributions and supply giveaways.
World Vision plans to provide 400,000 backpacks to children in need this year, and offers Teacher Resource Centers throughout the nation to help educators acquire classroom essentials. |
