Teachers who have had to pay for classroom supplies out of their own pockets should be rewarded with gift cards, says iCARD Systems.
The National School Supply and Equipment Association conducted a study last summer revealing that, on average, K-12 educators spend $448 of their own money during the school year to pay for 77 percent of the resources that they need for their classrooms.
"The economy has sent shock waves through an already beleaguered educational system," said Jeff Ehney, founder of iCARD. "Asking underpaid teachers to use their own money for class supplies is just wrong."
The company, which specializes in the development of prepaid cards for merchants and retailers, advised parents to purchase gift cards to show appreciation for their children's teachers. To offset the money that educators spend, iCARD has suggested that $25 from each student would be more than sufficient.
Appreciative parents and students will be able to add a personalized message or a certificate to their gift cards, which may be purchased through the company's website or obtained at school supply retailers such as Barnes and Noble, Staples and K-Mart. |
