As part of its national Teach Children to Save (TCTS) month, Astoria Federal Savings has announced that it will hold an essay contest for students in grades five through 12. In conjunction with the American Bankers Association, the TCTS program will send company representatives to K-12 classrooms throughout New York to teach students about healthy saving habits.
Astoria Federal Savings has sponsored this annual initiative for six years. In 2011, it expanded its efforts to promote financial literacy by inviting children and teens to tour banks and open savings accounts during the week of April 10. According to bank officials, the outreach program has received positive feedback from teachers and parents alike.
"We have had an even greater impact this year by expanding our curriculum and strengthening partnerships with local schools," said Brian Edwards, senior vice president and director of marketing at Astoria Federal Savings. "Our Teach Children to Save program enables us to nurture good saving and spending habits in young people."
As more than 2,000 children participated in the program in 2010, the company is confident that they will reach a large number of students this year.
