Efforts are being made across the nation to expose students to the benefits of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education.
The U.S. Army opened free registration for its web-based eCYBERMISSION competition on Wednesday, welcoming student participants in grades six through nine. The contest, which has awarded more than $8.8 million in savings bonds to students over the last eight years, asks students to utilize the scientific method to propose a solution to a problem in their community.
Online communication is an integral part of the competition because students can interact with eCYBERMISSION volunteers, talk with their teammates in chat rooms and scroll through interactive webinars.
The Orange County Register reports that the Broadcom Foundation recently launched its own competition, partnering with the Society for Science and the Public in an effort to get middle school students more involved in STEM.
"Middle school is sort of a sweet spot for educational development," Elizabeth Marincola, president of Society for Science & the Public, told the news provider.
The most recent study on academic trends by the U.S. Department of Education reveals that American students in the fourth grade and eighth grade have improved their math and science scores since 1995, according to the news source. |
