Each year, a significant number of students drop out of high school. Without a diploma, these individuals may have difficulty securing a high-paying career in the competitive job market.
In an effort to re-enroll these young people, the Des Moines Public Schools, Aviva USA and the United Way of Central Iowa have collaborated to hold the second annual Reach Out to Dropouts Day.
More than 200 volunteers will donate their time to this effort and will walk through neighborhoods in the Des Moines area, knocking on the doors of students who have not re-enrolled for the 2010-11 school year.
The effort has been successful in the past, as one young man who had dropped out in the 10th grade said that the volunteers convinced him to return to his classes. He saw that he had fallen behind, as many of his peers who had graduated were going on to college and discussing career opportunities.
Last year, Reach Out to Dropouts volunteers paid visits to 382 students in the area. A total of 23 kids re-enrolled that day, and appointments were made with school staff by an additional 58 students. |
