Special education teachers throughout the country will attend special workshops and events this month considering that April is World Autism Awareness Month.
Many of these sessions are designed simply to raise awareness about the developmental disorder, while some initiatives aim to offer helpful education tips to K-12 teachers. For example, the software developer TeachTown has released a video that describes the benefits of TeachTown Basics, a computer-aided instruction tool.
In the video, Rebecca Byers, a special education teacher for the last two decades, said that TeachTown Basics successfully engages children with autism while also helping them develop their math, language and behavior skills. The program applies the best practices in Applied Behavior Analysis and Discrete Trial Performance, which are two popular instruction methods in autism classrooms.
The activities are geared toward early childhood teachers, with interactive lessons based around telling time, adding numbers, identifying colors and interpreting facial expressions. Four animated characters named Jelly, Pico, Mochi and Ginger lead the exercises.
"Developing this amount of curriculum would take a substantial amount of time that could be better spent working directly with children," said Byers. |
